Master of the Craft: Porsche Design 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition

It seems that the region with the highest density of magnums is in southern Styria. They like to think big. This region, close to the Slovenian border, is characterized by its wine-growing industry and is known for producing the world's finest Sauvignon Blanc wine. Porsche has always dreamed big, and it still does today. So it's no surprise that this delicate location was chosen to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the brand's first sports car and to use the occasion to launch a Porsche Design limited edition anniversary watch. But Austria has another great meaning for Porsche. Founder Ferry Porsche was Austrian and produced his first sports car in Gmünd.

Everything starts small, Porsche does, and so does our trip to southern Styria. Specifically, the quiet town of Ehrenhausen, about 45 kilometers from Graz. It's a peaceful place where you can relax and explore the hilly landscape by bike, hike or drive. On this sunny day, we selected several new and historic Porsche cars. From the powerful GT3 RS to the bright orange 911 Carrera 2.7 from 1973. Also on the wrist is the new 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition, created for the 7th anniversary and presented in the company of the brand's own cars.

On June 8, 1948, the first Porsche prototype with chassis number 356-001 received its road license. The Porsche 356 "Nr. 1" Roadster was a unique model, followed by a series of rear-engined 356 sports cars. With more than one million units produced to date, the Porsche 911 undoubtedly marks an important chapter in the brand's history. In 2019, Porsche will open a new chapter with its "Mission E" car and enter the field of electric sports cars.

On the one hand, they are already working carefully on the electric engine of the future, on the other hand, they are still focusing on the mechanical side. The 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition, limited to 1,948 pieces, is a tribute to the 356 of 1948 – hence the odd number – and has some of the characteristics of this vintage sports car, but also a highly modern "body". It is made of matte titanium carbide coating and is therefore very light. As with all Porsche Design watches, the focus is on the dial and clean lines.

The dial of the 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition features the outline of the Porsche 356 and the year 1948. There used to be an instrument panel in the sports car that displayed the speedometer and tachometer. The ring on the dial is inspired by the typical ring of the original tachometer. The hands remain white to ensure good readability – another important feature of Porsche Design in watch design. The black wristband is made of the same quality leather as the seats of the sports car.

In one of the most famous wine-producing regions in Europe, Porsche has followed the footsteps of the brand's history and also produced its own wine to celebrate this special moment. They have teamed up with renowned winemaker Manfred Tement to create Cuvée 356. Thirty years ago, Manfred Tement was one of the first winemakers in the region to recognise the potential of the region’s Sauvignon Blanc grape. All three winemakers have big ambitions and want to create something great.
